Curriculum interculturALE

What is Curriculum interculturALE?

Curriculum interculturALE is a tailor-made intercultural-didactical training course for instructors and volunteer learning guides who work with refugees in low-threshold language courses. The training opens up a space where adult educators can reflect on and learn how to tackle challenges like the increasing diversity in the classroom, distress and trauma, language barriers and differences in educational backgrounds of learners. The training has been developed by DVV International in cooperation with an international team of experts. It consists of a curriculum as well as teaching and learning materials (methods, videos and dossiers) on themes such as communication, integration, trauma, migration, culture and identity, teaching and learning approaches in different countries, etc.

Who can use Curriculum interculturALE?

The training course and the collection of teaching and learning materials are aimed at improving the skills of instructors and volunteers working with refugees in the education sector, e.g. in low-threshold language courses, integration and orientation courses etc. The collection of teaching and learning materials “Curriculum interculturALE” can be used flexibly by various educational organisations involved in refugee work in order to develop tailor-made intercultural and didactic training offers for their staff.

The project was funded from 2017 to 2019 by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the ‘Einstieg Deutsch’ (‘First steps in German’) project, implemented by the German Adult Education Association (Deutscher Volkshochschul-Verband/DVV).

Curriculum interculturALE provides instructors with an understanding of the reality of refugees’ lives and of the challenges that they face. In addition to the content, the question of how to impart knowledge is also of central importance to me. And the participatory education approach has proved its worth here, especially when it comes to multicultural learning environments.

The strength of Curriculum interculturALE lies in the fact that it motivates self-reflection and self-questioning. It shakes up apparently sound knowledge relating to cultural backgrounds, traditions, mentality, attitudes, etc. This paves the way for a completely different approach toward learning from one another as the course progresses.

The most important learning experience was the fact-finding trip to Jordan, where we gained an insight into the work with Syrian refugees. One of the takeaways here was the feelings of strangeness and deep connection at the same time. I also became familiar with specific leitmotifs that seem to be a universal foundation for encounters with refugees, and also for successful cooperation in general: respect in dealing with one another, meeting on an equal footing, and questioning one’s own assumptions and projections about others.
