The Silk-screen Printing Process

The techniques of the silk-screen process offer the possibility of producing posters with simple means in a various number in the field of adult education, especially in Iiteracy, particularly in rural areas.

Experiments in some literacy campaigns demonstrated that coloured posters with pictures and text could greatly stimulate the learning-motivation of people.

The silk-screen process is a very old printing technique which was popular es pecially in China some centuries ago. During the last years the silk-screen process has become known through modern art. In the following we shall give a practical instruction of how one can produce a silk-screen with simple means. The possibili ties and variations of silk-screen are so many that everybody who has started with it once has unlimited facilities for the production of posters and similar printed material.

The Silk-screen Printing Process 1, 2

a) At first we make a frame with wooden ledges of 5 –7mm. The proportion of the frame depends on the size of the posters we wish to print (see pictures 1 and 2). lf we have a wooden base the size of the frame, we would be able to connect it with two hinges with the frame. If this is lacking, we can join it with two small pieces of a used inner tube of an automobile or a bicycle (see picture 3).

b) The second important instrument for our silk-screen is the wiper. It can be self-made, too. Therefore, we need two small wooden planks and two pieces of inner tube of 0.5–1 cm (see pictures 4 and 5).

c) Now we cover the frame with silk-screen, cheeseloth (mosquito net) and fix it with drawing pins.

d) Now we need a stencil for the printing. For the first experiment we can cut figures and letters out of magazines and stick them to the frame. Between the frame and the wooden base we put the printing paper. The printing process is simple. If we cut out a figure and stick it to the frame, the figure will remain unprinted after brushing the frame with colour. Instead we can make a stencil by cutting out figures and letters and then stick this stencil to the frame. In this case, it is very important that the stencil is stuck to the inside of the frame (see pictures 6 and 7).

e) Now we are able to begin the printing process. We brush some colour on the frame and draw it slowly with the wiper from top to bottom. If we use several stencils for one poster, we shall be able to make a multicolour print. If there is only one printing frame, it is necessary to clean it with water after each printing process. Of course, the wiper also has to be cleaned carefully with water.
