Curriculum globALE

What is Curriculum globALE?

Curriculum globALE (CG) is a cross-cultural, output-orientated core curriculum for training adult educators worldwide. It was developed jointly by the German Institute for Adult Education, Leibniz-Center for Lifelong Learning (DIE) and DVV International, the Institute for International Cooperation of the German Adult Education Association. In five modules, it describes the relevant skills needed to lead successful courses and provides guidance on their practical implementation.

Who can use Curriculum globALE?

The Curriculum is initially aimed at institutions and organisations in Adult Learning and Education (ALE) that wish to ensure a qualification level of their educators satisfying professional standards. As a quality-assuring reference framework, Curriculum globALE provides an international standard that also addresses other interested specialist audiences and education policy decision-makers beyond the level of adult education institutions.

Curriculum globaALE (CG) encouraged educators to adapt it to the local context in Lao PDR in terms of both content and approach. Instead of beginning with theories of adult learning and education, the Training of Master Trainers in Non-Formal Education began with an understanding of the local context and practice of adult learning and education. This was aimed at providing the facilitators with a better understanding of ALE in Lao PDR, but it was also about acknowledging the knowledge and experience that the participants brought into the Training of Master Trainers in Non-Formal Education.

I have delivered Curriculum GlobALE(CG)-based training programmes for various groups of Palestinian adult educators. This has shown me that adult educators often come from a range of educational backgrounds. While they have developed strong experience over the years, it is rare for them to be given opportunities to reflect on their practice, enhance their skills, exchange with other educators, or seek further career development. I have seen that CG is a holistic programme that can easily fill in the gap created by the absence of such opportunities.

Ola Issa, Country Director, DVV International Palestine

I joined the training course because at that time I was really shy and did not dare to express myself. But it really inspired me when I saw others who were able to express themselves. This made me really want to attend Curriculum globALE training because I knew that I would practice many skills. The most important things I learned were coaching skills, including designing activities and games that help people to think and learn. I also improved my analytical thinking as well as my counselling skills and my creativity. I further managed to overcome fear and become more courageous.

I am currently working in a peripheral centre for young people and adults. Some are mothers or fathers, whilst others have leadership responsibilities in the community. In my teaching I apply what I learned in the Curriculum globALE (CG) training, combining the life trajectory, self-confidence and the leadership role of the students in order to generate competencies that meet the demands of a globalised world. Aware of the need to continue strengthening and empowering in-service teachers, we graduates of CG got organised to form the Network of Trainers in Youth and Adult Education. We work together with the aim of helping to improve and transform teaching practice through regional and macro-regional congresses, specialised dialogues or working groups.

Jacquelin Paula Liñán Morillo, President of the Network of Trainers in Youth and Adult Education, Peru

When the Curriculum globALE (CG) programme started, I had 15 years of experience in training adults, but my development had taken place mainly on short-term training courses conducted by various NGOs. CG brought in a systemic, deep and complex approach. These features make this programme unique and special on the country’s training market. It can be used as a core programme for a variety of tailored options for adults on various levels – in higher education as well as among NGOs, and for constructing new optional modules.

Valentina Olaru, Director of the “Lucian Blaga” Theoretical Lyceum and DVV International Trainer, Chisinau, Republic of Moldova

The Curriculum globALE (CG) has allowed the term Youth and Adult Education to be used more frequently and, as a result of the CG course organised by DVV International in Peru, it began to be used among teachers according to the understanding that students in alternative basic education should receive an education that considers the nature of learning as an activity that is engaged in before, during and after a person’s educational phases. Thus, lifelong learning affirms that the experience of learning occurs throughout the life cycle and in the different spaces in which we develop our lives.

Lucila Landeo Sánchez, Instructor at the local adult education centre Mateo Pumacahua, graduate of the Curriculum globALE studies programme, Peru

From my perspective, the learning effect of Curriculum globALE (CG) allows participants to create a theoretical and methodological basis for professional activities, let them understand and evaluate the scale of their own activities, and accept and share the values of adult education with colleagues and students. Furthermore, the CG programme has a solid basis, and the ability to be adapted to specific participants’ needs at the same time.
