Algeria
DVV International has been working in Algeria since 2023, coordinating its activities through the Regional Office for North Africa in Tunis. The work of DVV International stems from a country and feasibility study carried out in 2022, which was coordinated with all Algerian as well as German stakeholders. The study showed the country’s potential for an innovative partnership in the field of adult learning and education (ALE).
ALE in its various facets – (functional) literacy, non-formal vocational training, political education, etc. – is predominantly directed by the Algerian government. Where civil society organisations are involved, they usually take on the role of service providers for the state. The challenges facing ALE include, in particular, providing access to lifelong learning opportunities for certain target groups (e.g. those who did not finish schooling, prisoners and nomadic population groups), updating curricula in terms of methodology, didactics and learning content, as well as implementing measures to prevent adults from relapsing into illiteracy.
Main focus of work
- Cross-sector dialogue: DVV International supports the analysis of different ALE sectors in the country and promotes dialogue and networking among various ALE stakeholders at the national level.
- Scientifically sound research on ALE: An informal North African network for scientific research is currently being established, such that new exchange formats are being created within this framework throughout the Maghreb countries.
- Strengthening adult education organisations and their professionals: DVV International strengthens the pedagogical capacities of its Algerian partners by providing training for teachers. In addition, a project management toolbox for ALE organisations has been developed and piloted.
- Piloting innovative approaches to adult education: DVV International supports partners to offer non-formal and employment-orientated education and training courses for individuals with special needs.
