Continental project Asia

DVV International is not only committed to strengthening adult learning and education (ALE) in individual countries, but also to promoting professional exchange between countries and regions, and fostering joint lobbying for ALE. This interregional coordination enables products and materials with regional or even global scope to be developed, adapted to specific contexts, and creates an avenue to allow demands for better ALE programmes to be voiced at regional and global forums.

In Asia, these efforts are framed by a continental programme that enables joint measures by the regional and country offices on the one hand, and involves cooperation with two regional education networks on the other. Individual initiatives and collaborations are managed by the offices involved.

Main areas of work

  • The education networks ASPBAE (Asia South Pacific Association for Basic and Adult Education) in Central, South East and South Asia and AHAED (Arab House for Adult Education and Development) in the Middle East and North Africa are lobbying to improve the framework conditions for ALE.
  • The “Adult Learning and Education System Building Approach” (ALESBA) developed by DVV International in Africa is being introduced in Asia and used to analyse ALE systems.
  • Together with the above-mentioned education networks, adult educators in Asia receive further professional and methodological training and access to a network where they can support each other.
  • The framework curricula from DVV International’s toolbox―such as for training ALE specialists and managers, for strengthening educational institutions and for introducing programmes on intercultural education and sustainable development―are modified, adapted to the needs of partner organisations and thus available for partners in Asia.

Partners

DVV International works in Asia at the regional level with two main partners: The Asia South Pacific Association for Basic and Adult Education (ASPBAE) is a member organisation with approximately 160 civil society and 100 individual members in 31 countries in Asia and the Pacific region (see https://www.aspbae.org/). The Arab House for Adult Education and Development (AHAED) is a network of various education networks in the Arab region (see ahaed.org/who-we-are/).
