As part of the cooperation between DVV International and Pronatura Sur, a new solar energy system has been inaugurated at the Moxviquil Training Centre in Chiapas, Mexico. Beyond reducing the centre's environmental footprint, the installation expands Moxviquil as a hands-on learning space where sustainability is experienced in practice.
The Moxviquil Training Centre for Sustainability, located in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, has taken an important step towards energy self-sufficiency with the inauguration of a modern solar panel system.
This initiative was financed by DVV International under the project "Weaving New Strategies Focused on Migration, Education and Development in the Guatemala–Mexico Cross-Border Context: For the Rights of All", with the aim of strengthening the work of Comprehensive Training Centres and deepening their connection to Adult Learning and Education (ALE).
The integration of renewable energy allows the community-based learning processes at Moxviquil to fully reflect the sustainability principles promoted by the centre. At the same time, the new infrastructure serves as a living example of environmental education in practice.
A strategic partnership for sustainable development
The installation of the solar energy system is the latest achievement in the long-standing partnership between DVV International and Pronatura Sur in southeastern Mexico. Both organisations have collaborated for several years and continue to deepen their cooperation through the 2025–2027 Regional Programme, promoting an approach rooted in territorial identity and environmental stewardship.
Over the years, this partnership has led to the implementation of projects with significant social and environmental impact across Chiapas. These include the Diploma Programme for Young Trainers in Climate Change, the Rural Upper Secondary School and Bachelor's Degree Programme, as well as a range of agroecological education initiatives designed for local youth.
These programmes equip participants with practical and theoretical skills while empowering them to become advocates for environmental protection and leaders of sustainable development in their communities.
A hub for regional learning
The collaboration between DVV International and Pronatura Sur has enabled Moxviquil to strengthen its role as a training centre and become a regional hub connecting educational institutions from Mexico and Guatemala.
Today, the centre serves as a platform for the exchange of knowledge, experiences and methodologies among organisations from Mexico and Guatemala, strengthening regional learning networks and cross-border cooperation.
From this territory, internationally recognised training frameworks promoted by DVV International – such as Curriculum GlobALE and Curriculum ManagerALE – have also been enriched. In the coming years, the implementation of Curriculum AmbientALE, originally developed by DVV International Cuba, will also be promoted, further expanding opportunities for the exchange of methodologies and knowledge grounded in local realities and a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.
Education leading by example
The transition to solar energy not only reduces the centre's environmental footprint but also turns Moxviquil into an open learning space where students, partner organisations and visitors can experience the benefits of applied eco-technologies first-hand.
Through this achievement, DVV International and Pronatura Sur reaffirm a partnership built on years of mutual trust and show that transformative environmental education creates lasting impact when sustainability is not only taught but put into practice.
