The Central Asian Adult Education Forum 2019, which was hosted by DVV International in cooperation with UNESCO, dealt with "Global Citizenship Education: Opportunities and Challenges for Central Asia”.
The forum brought together international experts in global citizenship education – mainly from non-governmental organisations – from 13 countries, including the Republic of Korea, Mongolia, Germany, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. It took place from 24 to 26 June in the village of Chok Tal, on the shores of Lake Issyk Kul, Kyrgyzstan.
According to UNESCO, Global Citizenship Education (GCED) “aims to empower learners of all ages to assume active roles, both locally and globally, in building more peaceful, tolerant, inclusive and secure societies.”
One of the main objectives of the Forum was to raise the awareness of education experts and practitioners as well as opinion- and decision-makers from Central Asian countries about the role of Global Citizenship Education in lifelong learning and achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on quality education.
The participants presented and discussed contents and formats of Global Citizenship Education in their countries, and shared experiences and best practice examples, e.g. in the development of respective curricula and learning offers targeting especially vulnerable groups of the population.
The participants underlined the relevance and potential of Global Citizenship Education for the countries of Central Asia, discussed how approaches from other regions of the world could be adapted to the Central Asian context, and worked on ideas for potential future projects.
As a result, DVV International and UNSECO will develop a policy brief on Global Citizenship Education in Central Asia, and agree on it with the participants of the Forum.
The Central Asian Adult Education Forum is organised by DVV International every two years, tackling key questions in adult education and development in the region.
