In cooperation with its Jordanian partners and under the patronage of Jordan’s Minister of Education, Higher Education and Scientific Research, DVV International organised a conference titled “The Future of Adult Education in Jordan”, that took place on 9 and 10 September 2019 in Amman.

More than 100 representatives of governmental, private and civil society institutions discussed the realities of adult education in Jordan and possible ways for the further development of the sector.

To set the scene, two keynote speakers looked at different concepts of adult education at the international and the national level and the role of adult education for development. In the panel which followed, representatives from the Jordan government, the private sector and civil society identified and discussed the main challenges when implementing adult education programmes and projects.

In smaller working groups, participants looked at the different adult education providers and the main target groups of adult education in Jordan, shared international experiences on policy development in adult education and discussed mechanisms on how to find entry points into the labour market for adult learners.

In addition, participants revised and accepted the draft working paper: “Towards a vision for promoting adult education and lifelong learning as an approach and a tool for learning and development”, which includes recommendations on how to strengthen the adult education system in Jordan.

The organisational committee, consisting of participants from the various stakeholders, has now been commissioned to integrate the results of the conference’s discussions into the draft paper and to take further steps for the realisation of the conference recommendations.

The conference was organised by DVV International under the patronage of the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Scientific Research in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Labour, the University of Jordan, the Greater Amman Municipality and the Jordan River Foundation.
