DVV International celebrates its 50th anniversary in May. Founded in 1969 as a small specialist unit for adult education in developing countries, the institute is now represented in over 30 countries with more than 200 people on its staff.
Dr. Gerd Müller, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, David Atchoarena, Director of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) and Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, President of the DVV, have announced their intention to attend the ceremony. It is no coincidence that this anniversary will be officially celebrated on the evening of 7 May 2019 in Weimar, where the Weimar Constitution was passed 100 years ago with a statutory mandate for German adult education centres (Volkshochschulen - vhs).
In the context of the ceremony, the „Rita-Süssmuth-Preis für die internationale Volkshochschule“ (Rita Süssmuth Award for the international Volkshochschule) will also be awarded for the first time under the patronage of the German Association of Cities. A total of up to 250 guests from Germany and abroad are expected.
The award ceremony takes place within the framework of the international conference: “The Power of Adult Learning and Education – Achieving the SDGs”, organised by DVV International, which highlights the role of adult education in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. In accordance with Agenda 2030 of the United Nations, 150 international experts will discuss the significance of adult education for the educational goal itself and how it can contribute to achieving central Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as decent work, reduction of inequalities, climate protection and promotion of peace and justice.
