On April 26, 2023, the City Hall of Chisinau, in partnership with DVV International in Moldova, officially launched the first Municipal Centre for Adult Learning and Education in Chisinau (CMIEA).

On April 26, 2023, the City Hall of Chisinau, in partnership with DVV International in Moldova, officially launched the first Municipal Centre for Adult Learning and Education in Chisinau (CMIEA)[1], located in a separate wing of one of the high schools in Chisinau municipality. It was possible to set up the centre because of a fruitful cooperation between Chisinau City Hall and DVV International Moldova. The cooperation was officially sealed in a Memorandum of Understanding signed on August 9, 2022. Chisinau Municipality took responsibility to provide premises for the CMIEA and hire about 13 employees, who will be responsible for providing engaging learning activities in inviting spaces. DVV International renovated and equipped the provided premises and is partnering with the newly recruited team of the CMIEA in developing non-formal education programs for the adult population of the city.

The official launch of the centre brought together officials, stakeholders, educators – about 50 participants in all. Among the high-level guests were Ion Ceban, the Mayor, and Angela Cutasevici, Vice Mayor for social issues as the representatives of the City Hall, Merle Kreibaum, head of economic cooperation of the German Embassy in the Republic of Moldova, and others.  Uwe Gartenschlaeger, the director, and Bettina Brand, senior regional desk officer for Europe, were guests who traveled from DVV International headquarters.  The representatives from City Hall and DVV International emphasized the importance of developing and promoting adult education in the context of lifelong learning.

The event commenced with a short tour of the site, followed by a press conference which was also attended by the high-level guests. The public, represented by the people who signed-up for illustrative topical masterclasses, participated in four workshops: “English language for beginners”, “Writing a convincing CV”, “Digital tools for career advancement”, “Live healthy, eat smart”. The participants were delighted with the trial sessions and were eager to continue the courses. Numerous local media channels covered the event extensively through video, audio reports and press articles.

The centre will be open to all adults, including those from vulnerable groups. The educational offers will aim at supporting personal development as well as the development of the city as a whole through innovative programs in new formats – exploring formal, non-formal and informal education contexts. The belief is that through such learning offers many adults will improve their life situations and will thus be able to be reintegrated into the economic and cultural life of the city.
