DVV shocked by Russian attacks on Ukraine

The German Adult Education Association is shocked and appalled by Russia's attacks on Ukraine and the related acts of war in Europe. We are in great concern for the people in the country, the staff and local partner organisations of our Institute for International Cooperation (DVV International).

The DVV International team consists of ten local staff members and one seconded German expert who was evacuated to Germany two weeks ago. We are in close contact with our local staff, the German Embassy and the funding agencies in order to be able to offer as much help as possible in the current very confusing situation. We will continuously monitor the situation and, in consultation with the donors, partners and colleagues on the ground, evaluate at the appropriate time how the cooperation can be developed in the future.

Since 2010, DVV International has been working with a regional office in Kiev to strengthen adult education and civil society in Ukraine, which, like other countries in the region, is characterised by profound social, political and demographic upheaval. Together with its Ukrainian partners, DVV International strengthens civil society organisations and networks that develop and implement needs-oriented education concepts for various target groups – especially for socially disadvantaged people.

Within the framework of its adult education programmes, DVV International cooperates with local civil society education providers in seven areas of Ukraine (Sumy, Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Poltava, Zavoritshzhya, Vinnytsya, Lviv). The diverse measures promote democracy, human rights, participation and conflict prevention in multi-ethnic societies, cultural and ethnic diversity and pluralism. They support vocational training and further education, social entrepreneurship and sustainable development. Last but not least, we advise the Ukrainian Ministry of Education on the country's first adult education law.

DVV International's work on the ground is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Federal Foreign Office.
