Kick-off event for intercultural education project

The aim is to develop an intercultural and didactic qualification for instructors in Germany teaching low-threshold German courses for refugees.

DVV International has many years of experience when it comes to working with refugees worldwide. The Institute is now using this experience as a basis to develop an additional intercultural and didactic qualification for instructors in Germany teaching low-threshold German courses for refugees at Adult Education Centres. A team of international experts got together in Bonn from 22 to 24 September 2017 to launch the project.

The team is made up of eight experts engaged in education and integration work with refugees from the Arab region, including Jordan, Palestine, Iraq and Turkey, as well as from the intercultural educational work of the Adult Education Centres.

The team of experts exchanged experiences with course staff from the Adult Education Centres whilst drawing up an assessment of needs. The exchange also included refugees attending low-threshold German courses, who contributed the course attendees’ perspective, as well as colleagues from the German Adult Education Association working in Germany and abroad. They met to discuss intercultural challenges posed by the everyday work in the courses, and developed a profile of objectives which serve as an orientation in the additional intercultural (educational) political and didactic qualification. The additional qualification is to support instructors in their efforts to customise learning processes in line with the needs of the highly-varied target groups among refugees. Furthermore, it is intended to strengthen instructors’ self-reflection as well as their understanding of the experience of the individual course attendees, such as with regard to their learning habits and educational biographies.

The team of experts is currently working on an appropriate curriculum, which is to be transferred at a further meeting to be held in November into a training plan for training multipliers. Suitable teaching and learning materials are being selected and developed for this purpose. The next step is for training courses to be held for multipliers at a number of Regional Adult Education Associations, after which the additional qualification for course staff will be offered in the second half of 2018.

The project is promoted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the project entitled “Einstieg Deutsch” (First steps in German), which is being implemented by the German Adult Education Association (DVV).
