Issue 85 (2018) of the international journal Adult Education and Development (AED) looks at the role and impact of adult education from a global perspective.

What role does adult education play in society and in the lives of individuals? What contribution can it make to meeting challenges such as poverty, globalisation or digitisation? How can adult educators ensure that their programmes and offers achieve the desired impact? And how can we measure impact?

Contributors from over 20 countries reflect on these and other questions in the current issue of Adult Education and Development. For example, Aaron Benavot takes a critical look at the role of adult education in the sustainable development goals, while Henrique Lopes illustrates how adult education as “healthcare literacy” can save our lives. Outi Perähuhta uses an example from Sierra Leone to illustrate how functional literacy can sustainably improve the lives of learners, and Samuel Asnake comments on the role of adult education for the future of the African continent.

In the “True Stories” section, colleagues from around the globe tell us their story on how adult education has personally affected and changed them. And photographer Steve Camargo accompanies 37-year-old Nancy from Bolivia, who opened a family restaurant after a further training course in gastronomy.

The Adult Education and Development journal is a forum for adult educators from all over the world. It has been published since 1973 by DVV International – the Institute for International Cooperation of the German Adult Education Association (Deutscher Volkshochschul-Verband e.V., DVV). It appears once a year in English, French and Spanish. For the current issue, in cooperation with the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE), a virtual seminar (in English) will be held in February 2019.
