DVV International and the Afghan National Association for Adult Education (ANAFAE) opened a new Teacher Training Centre in Mazar-e Sharif on 18 April 2018. The Centre will provide teacher training and introduce new participatory models of teaching with a focus on active learner involvement.
At his speech marking the opening of the new Centre, the German Consul at Mazar-e Sharif Dr. Klinke underlined the important role played by qualified teacher training for lifelong learning and for the development of the future perspectives of the younger generation in Afghanistan. According to the Consul, young people should be motivated and inspired towards acquiring new skills and competences in order to take their future into their own hands and shape the conditions for living a better life in their own country. The German Consulate General supported the construction of the new Teacher Training Centre on the compound of the Community Learning Centre in District 7 of Mazar City through a small project fund.
The Director of the Provincial Ministry of Economics Mr Janat Gul pointed towards the role that young people can play in development initiatives in the province, and underlined the need for qualified teacher training. In the name of the advisory committee that oversees the development of eight Community Learning Centres run by ANAFAE with the support of DVV International in Mazar-e Sharif, he and Ms Breshna Rabe, Member of Parliament, thanked Consul Dr. Klinke for the support of the German Consulate General. The opening was televised at provincial and national level.
Teachers support young people in their transition from school to working life
More than 160 young teachers form the backbone of the education programs provided by the education centres run by the ANAFAE Network in Mazar-e Sharif. The new Teacher Training Centre has already started operating new programmes for teachers supporting young people in their transition from school to working life. New models of teaching and supporting young entrepreneurs in developing their business ideas and starting up their new businesses are being refined in the Teacher Training Centre.
The Centre also functions as a test centre for the teachers. More than 80 English, IT and Art teachers have already sat their specific annual test in order to ascertain the progress that they have made in terms of their teaching skills. This is also intended to provide them with ideas on what new training interventions are needed.
Focus on learner-orientated teaching
Other teacher training activities will start in May 2018 in order to develop a participatory teaching methodology and to further active learner involvement. These training activities are about transforming the teaching process to focus on learner-orientated teaching rather than on the chalk-and-talk teaching method and the rote learning and memorisation format.
ANAFAE and DVV International operate a total of 23 education centres across the country, with eight of them in Mazar-e Sharif and a new one opening in July 2018. 82.553 young learners were counted over all the education programmes run by the the ANAFAE Network of Education Centres in Mazar-e Sharif City in 2017, roughly 44 % of these students being young women.
