The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has launched a campaign called #Darum Entwicklungszusammenarbeit (Why development cooperation) to show how international development cooperation makes a difference and improves the lives of the local people. DVV International supports this campaign and took part in the launch video which was published on 24 October.
“International development cooperation promotes peace and security worldwide. It combats inequality, hunger and poverty. It protects the climate. Development cooperation focuses on education and decent work. It gives people in poorer countries a perspective and at the same time improves life in Germany.” This is how the BMZ describes development cooperation on its campaign page.
Adult learning and education (ALE) plays an important role in this work. As part of the German Adult Education Association family, DVV International is active in more than 30 countries in order to provide disadvantaged young people and adults with access to education.
“It is important to learn and to know how to break cycles of poverty,” says Nkosinamandla Lila from South Africa in the campaign video. He is a community youth leader of the non-governmental organisation Popular Education Programme, a long-standing partner of DVV International. With its participatory education programmes, the Popular Education Programme is aimed in particular at young people in South African townships whose lives are often marked by violence and poverty. The educational programmes help them to reflect on everyday life, to get involved in their community and to develop new perspectives.”
In order to achieve sustainable results, DVV International works in its project countries with partners from government, civil society and academia, across different sectors and levels of government. Together, they are committed to creating sustainable ALE systems that can provide needs-oriented, high-quality adult learning and education in the long term.
DVV International is convinced that development cooperation and ALE not only improve the lives of people in partner countries, but also make an important contribution to the overcoming of global challenges such as poverty and inequality, the climate crisis as well as the consequences of flight and migration.
The #Darum Entwicklungszusammenarbeit (Why development cooperation) campaign will run through to 24 November 2024.
