In 2019, DVV International Georgia has implemented the project "The Art of Peacebuilding: Comics for Peace and Stability in the Caucasus".
The aim of the project was to build trust through the means of art among young people from the different parties of the frozen conflict between Georgia, the breakaway Abkhazia and Russia.
20 young people jointly produced the comic "MatamorFish" which tells the story of a karmic metamorphosis. The group, which gave itself the name "coMIX", consisted of five young people from breakaway Abkhazia, five young people from Russia and ten young people from Georgia proper. The group took part in two workshops in which they learned about artistic methods and instruments for conflict management. But the process itself was much more important than the actual professional production of the comic, because it brought the young people, who live isolated from each other in their everyday lives, closer together.
A thousand copies of the completed comic were distributed to young people in Abkhazia, Georgia and Russia - as a symbol of the newly established trusting and open relationships that will endure despite the artificially imposed borders. The comic is now also available in digital form.
The project "The Art of Peacebuilding: Comics for Peace and Stability in the Caucasus" was funded by the Federal Foreign Office.
