On August 3, representatives of the 193 Member states of the United Nations in New York agreed on a new global development agenda, the so-called Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They follow the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were adopted in 2000 and expire in 2015. The new development goals will be officially adopted in September at a UN summit of the heads of state and governments from around the world.
The SDGs include a catalog of 17 global goals with a total of 169 sub-objectives. The overall goal is to end global poverty by 2030, to create prosperity for all, and to protect the planet. Education plays a vital role in achieving these objectives. In conjunction with the International Council for Adult Education ICAE and regional adult education associations ASPBAE (Asia), CEEAL (Latin America) and EAEA (Europe), and in cooperation with the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, DVV International has, in recent years, been intensively involved in the negotiations of the global development agenda. The common objective was and is the anchoring of a forward-looking, holistic understanding of lifelong learning and education in the SDGs.
It is, in particular, thanks to the efforts of civil society that a comprehensive educational goal was formulated and was introduced as a proposal for the educational goal of the SDGs at the World Education Summit in Incheon in May. In contrast to the MDGs, where education was reduced mainly to primary education, the education agenda will be extended towards a holistic understanding of education by the declaration chosen in New York: “Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”.
