DVV International, as the lead institution in the consortium of the European Association for the Education of Adults (EAEA) and seven EU partners (Verband österreichischer Volkshochschulen, Austria; Eesti Rahvaülikoolide Liit, Estonia; AONTAS Ireland; Dafni Kentro Epaggelmatikis Katartisis, Greece; Dansk Folkeoplysnings Samråd, Denmark; Kansanvalistusseura, Finland, and Associació Catalana per a l’Educació, Spain), put in the winning bid for an Erasmus+ project by the name of “Bildung”. The project will start in December 2020 and run over a period of 30 months.
BILDUNG stands for “Building Inclusive Lifelong learning systems by Developing a European Understanding of Bildung for the Next Generations”, and this is the full title of the project proposal. This project will explore “Bildung” (in the above mentioned understanding) as a key approach to adult learning and education that responds to current political, social and economic challenges such as climate change, changes in democratic participation, as well as insufficient digital and basic skills among the European population. “Bildung” aims to empower people with the personal, interpersonal and civic skills that they need to become active citizens.
The project intends to develop a background paper on “Bildung” which will be disseminated among policymakers at all levels of adult education policies, adult education associations, organisations and providers as well as Academia. Thematic modules will be produced that provide good practices and practical guidelines for adult education organisations on the four themes “Bildung and democracy”, “Bildung and digitisation”, “Bildung and sustainability”, “Bildung and basic education”. Based on the analyses carried out earlier in the project, the partnership will develop a roadmap for implementing and strengthening “Bildung” in adult learning systems in Europe.
The project’s target groups are policy-makers at different levels; organisations working in other sectors of education and in other policy fields, trainers and staff in adult education, and last but not least the learners themselves, who are to benefit from the new concept of “Bildung”. It is expected that the experiences and good practices of “Bildung” will be disseminated via conferences and workshops within the networks, and will be taken up by organisations which were not initially part of the consortium. It is therefore expected to achieve an outreach that goes far beyond the actual consortium.
The methodologies used in “Bildung” can increase motivation to learn and therefore help to increase participation levels in adult education, particularly of those groups furthest away from learning. The results of this project will promote a holistic approach to adult learning that helps reach out to low-skilled people, refugees and migrants, but also to all other groups of society in need of learning, in order to achieve full social inclusion for all.
