Curriculum globALE: West Africa now has a pool of certified adult educators

Participatory methods form an important foundation of adult education: participants in the Curriculum globALE training course work together to develop criteria for selecting suitable methods.

In May 2026, the final training phase of the regional professional development programme for adult educators, based on the Curriculum globALE, was successfully completed in Abidjan. Following a learning process spanning several years, fourteen participants from eight West African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Togo) received their certificates on 26 May and now form a regional pool of qualified trainers for adult education.

The training programme was organised by DVV International in cooperation with Pamoja Education. Curriculum globALE is an internationally recognised framework curriculum for adult educators. The programme aims to strengthen the professionalism of trainers and multipliers in the field of lifelong learning and to promote shared quality standards in adult education.

During the final phase of the programme, participants focused on participatory teaching and learning methods, the design of learner-centred educational programmes, as well as issues of quality assurance and professionalisation in adult education. Alongside expert input, the programme also focused on peer exchange, reflection on practical experience and regional networking.

With the successful completion of the programme, West Africa now has, for the first time, a regional pool of certified Curriculum globALE trainers. In the future, these Anglophone and Francophone trainers will not only further enhance the quality of their own educational provision but will also contribute to the training of additional adult educators in their respective countries. The programme therefore is an important contribution to strengthening sustainable adult education structures across the region.

The training forms part of DVV International’s regional commitment to promoting integrated adult education systems in West Africa. Since early 2026, the regional office in Abidjan has coordinated activities across several countries in the region and supported governmental and civil society stakeholders in implementing strategies for literacy and lifelong learning.
