On World Press Freedom Day, DVV International presented two awards for outstanding reporting in the field of Adult Learning and Education (ALE) at the MISA Malawi Media Awards. The two winning entries focus on the reintegration of former prisoners into society and key challenges facing the education system.

DVV International in Malawi continues to honor the media’s efforts in promoting Adult Learning and Education (ALE). On 3rd May, the institute joined other non-governmental and corporate partners in commemorating World Press Freedom Day during the MISA Malawi Media Awards, an event organized by the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) – Malawi Chapter.

Celebrated annually since 1993, the World Press Freedom Day aims to promote and defend press freedom worldwide by raising awareness of its importance and honoring journalists who uphold it, often at great personal risk. This year’s event centered on the global impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on press freedom.

The 2025 winners: Kondwani Kamiyala (print) and Noel Mkwaila (digital)

During the ceremony, DVV International honored two journalists for excellent reporting on ALE. Each award included a cash prize of MK500,000 (approximately 250 Euro).

The ALE Award in the print media category went to Kondwani Kamiyala of Nation Publications Limited. Kamiyala’s story explored ways to reduce recidivism, e.g., by equipping inmates with vocational skills to support their reintegration into society and reduce reoffending.

The ALE Award in the digital media category was presented to Noel Mkwaila of Capital FM Radio. His report highlighted major challenges in the ALE sector, such as inadequate infrastructure and a lack of learning materials, and called for collaborative efforts to address them.

MISA Malawi Media Awards: Promoting quality journalism

Each year, MISA Malawi hosts the Annual Media Awards to celebrate journalistic excellence across a wide range of categories, including Business and Economics, Human Rights, Public Infrastructure Management, Health Research, Democracy and Good Governance, and Adult Learning and Education (ALE). MISA Malawi presents these media awards in conjunction with various organisations, depending on the sector. DVV International has been sponsoring the awards since 2020 for journalistic excellence in the area of ALE – in print and digital media.
