Second issue of the African MOJA Journal of Adult Education just published

The issue focuses on food security and food sovereignty.

DVV International’s continental project for Africa with its platform www.mojaafrica.net has just published the second issue of the MOJA Journal of Adult Education, focusing on food security and food sovereignty.

The second issue of the MOJA Journal of Adult Education is launched at a time when communities on the African continent and beyond continue to experience difficult socio-economic challenges. We live in a time of unprecedented climate change which is affecting farmers worldwide and limiting food production. In addition to this, the war in Ukraine has had a devastating impact on supplies and prices globally. Many African countries rely on a significant percentage of imports of their agricultural products such as wheat, vegetable oils and fertiliser from the Ukraine and Russia. The disruption of these global supply chains, among others, has resulted in reduced imports which, in turn, has led to escalating prices worldwide.

The issue looks at the intersection between food security and food sovereignty, and explores how adult education is helping communities to fight back. Authors from across the continent share experiences that draw attention to the work of adult educators working in community food systems and livelihoods, including:

  • How communities are dealing with food and hunger and building community food systems;
  • What new and/or emerging practices associated with building community food systems and livelihoods exist;
  • How adult practitioners support the development of community food systems and related livelihoods;
  • How we (re)think, (re)imagine, (re)build theory about community food systems and associated livelihoods.

The MOJA Journal of Adult Education is a journal committed to sharing and advancing knowledge and practical experience among the African adult education community to benefit the continent and its people. It is transdisciplinary in nature and strives to be inclusive in scope by accepting contributions which promote the intersection of theory and practice in adult learning and education in Africa. Practitioners, researchers and academics across all levels and sectors of adult education and adjacent fields are invited to submit contributions.

The MOJA Journal of Adult Education was launched in May 2022 following the establishment of the MOJA Digital Platform in April 2021. Each volume is dedicated to one major theme. The Journal is published in English and French and distributed in Africa and internationally. The Journal is mainly online with a small print-run. The Journal is financed by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
